Una.Lecture: Using AI and VR to train surgeons and assistants Join us online for the first Una.Lecture of 2025! Together we'll explore the development of algorithms and the use of AI in the training of surgeons and assistants. This lecture is co-organised by Universiteit Leiden’s Una Europa team and SAILS – a Leiden university-wide initiative which facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration on the use of Artificial Intelligence. Dr. Edris Mahtab, a thoracic surgeon, will speak about the work of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department at Leiden University Medical Center to develop Virtual Reality tools for training purposes. In addition, Dr. Samuel Max — a doctor and PhD candidate at LUMC's department of cardiothoracic surgery — will share his insights. |

Una Europa Epilepsy Data Challenge Are you ready to make a difference in the world of healthcare? In this challenge, participants will harness the power of Machine Learning to detect seizure events from data collected from over 200 epilepsy patients using a wearable device. The challenge kicks off in February with an online workshop, followed by release of the dataset to participants. Regular online Q&A sessions will be organised. In April, participants and Una Europa experts will come together in a joint workshop to present their findings and discuss their results with experts. |

Una Europa FAIR Data Hackathon Boost your FAIR data expertise, share your research with peers and develop your international network! FAIR data = Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. Apply to be part of this unique week at the Universiteit Leiden: deepen your FAIR data knowledge and skills, and connect with an international community by taking part in the 3-day hackathon and 2-day international SOLID data conference SOSY2025 in Leiden. Up to 4 UCD students will be supported to attend. Places are competitive. |

Virtual Exchange for Sustainability Are you a BSc, MSc, PhD or postdoctoral student? The UnaVEx virtual exchange is a free, five-week programme focused on sustainability. You will attend inspiring plenary talks on different perspectives on sustainability. You will also be introduced to an international small group of peers and a moderator. In groups, you will discuss and develop a collaborative, sustainability-themed action task. |

European Student Assembly The European Student Assembly (ESA) is an annual gathering of students from universities participating in European University Alliances (including UCD). More than 250 students participate in ESA annually with an aim to debate, first online and then in-person, issues that are central to students in Europe, draft policy recommendations on the future of Europe and advocate for them among stakeholders and decision-makers.
